Former World Champion and triple Olympian, Derval O’Rourke, together with Dublin’s 5-time All-Ireland Gaelic Football medal winner, Philly McMahon, launched the 2018 Staff Relay Series with PwC at the firm's Headquarters at Spencer Dock.
The Staff Relay Series, a fun 5 x 5km relay event and Ireland’s biggest mass participation relay is taking place in Phoenix Park on Thursday May 24 at 18:00.
Over 300 companies took part in last year’s event and race organisers expect to see up to 7,000 participants from all over the greater Dublin area and beyond at the 2018 night, which is rapidly gaining a reputation as Ireland’s premier staff night out.
Sponsors PwC is the largest single contributor to the event. Speaking at the launch, Susan Kilty, People Partner, PwC, said: "Last year we had over 75 teams participating in the Staff Relay Series which proved wonderful excitement, fun rivalry and we are delighted to be involved again in 2018.
Supporting the 2018 Staff Relay Series compliments our firm’s wellness programme "Boost", which encourages our people to keep their mind and body fit and healthy. It's a tailor made event for fun, fitness and teamwork among office friends and colleagues. It's great that it's an accessible event for all classes of runners from the serious to the fun runners. We're really looking forward to the 2018 event."
Helping launch the 2018 event, Derval O’Rourke said: “I am proud to be an PwC Race Ambassador for the Staff Relay Series. This event epitomises all that I stand for combining sport and healthy living with excellence, professionalism and good fun.
There is no barrier to entry, you don’t have to have an elite athletic background or even a massively high level of fitness. Because it’s a team event the focus is on teamwork not individual times which removes the biggest hurdle people often face when first starting out running. Its also great to be able to relax with your workmates afterwards, feeling that you’ve accomplished something together as a team ”
Philly McMahon also a PwC Staff Relay Series Ambassador for the event added: “I love the concept of the Staff Relay. It changes running from an individual sport to that of a team one, which I am an obvious advocate of. It also provides companies an alternative way of socializing with workmates whilst being responsible and looking after physical and mental health.”
The final kilometre of the relay route passes through the Relay Village – a tented area where companies set up office for the night – and colleagues can cheer and encourage their team mates as they complete the final leg of the relay before socialising over refreshments! The objective of the event is not about winning medals or posting record times but on building morale, camaraderie and teamwork whilst having the craic afterwards in the 'Staff Relay Village'. This is an event for organisations of all sizes and stature – from small local businesses to large multinationals. The only item on the agenda for 24 May will be for staff members to have fun in an outdoor environment.
Pierce O'Callaghan, Director, Global Relay Events, added: "The vision of the Staff Relay Series is clear – to provide a unique and special opportunity to build team spirit and create a sense of healthy competition within the workplace and to bring a sense of fun to a running event characterised with our hashtag #Run4aLaugh.
"The event has grown from strength to strength since the first run in 2011 and, with this exciting partnership with PwC, we are confident that we can continue to grow the event exponentially both in Dublin and throughout the other urban areas in Ireland."
