Identity and Access management: the key to operational technology security

  • January 29, 2024

As technology advances, cybersecurity measures have become necessary for every organisation. Modern industries heavily rely on operational technology (OT) and the internet of things (IoT), and the security of these systems is crucial to ensure the continuity of critical services such as water and power plants. Identity and access management (IAM) plays a vital role in OT security, as access management of OT-operated infrastructure is vital for any plant’s operation and overall integrity.

However, conventional IAM principles do not apply directly to OT security, and a modified approach is needed to meet OT requirements. We have designed an IAM framework to support a diverse and disparate OT environment. Cybersecurity threats and attacks in the energy sector are on the rise, and the OT sector is not far behind, adopting digital systems and technologies at a rapid pace. At this critical juncture, the importance and implications of IAM for OT systems cannot be overstated.

Our new whitepaper provides a comprehensive overview of the significance of IAM in OT security and its implications. It highlights the need for a modified approach to IAM governance and how it can improve compliance and risk management. The article also discusses the priority order of safety, availability, integrity and confidentiality for OT security.

If you’re interested in learning more about our IAM framework and the importance of IAM in OT security, explore the accompanying whitepaper for further details.
