14 May, 2019

Seán O’Shea and Aaron Gillane are named the PwC GAA/GPA Players of the Month

  • O’Shea starred in Kerry’s run to the Allianz League final
  • Gillane pointed the way as Limerick were crowned hurling league champions

The first of this year’s PwC GAA/GPA Player of the Month award winners were announced at PwC’s offices in Cork today. Kerry’s Seán O’Shea and Limerick’s Aaron Gillane were rewarded in football and hurling respectively, for their displays throughout the Allianz Leagues.

Munster Council Chairman Liam Lenihan and the GPA’s Donal Óg Cusack joined PWC Partner Ger O’Mahoney in making today’s presentation to the two players who are getting prepared for the beginning of the Munster Championships. The players took time out of their schedules to attend and reflect on the season so far.

Seán O’Shea finished the Allianz Football League as top scorer in Division 1 and was a key factor as Kerry reached the final where they came unstuck against Mayo. In total the 20-year old Kenmare student registered 1-50 over the course of the campaign including five points from placed balls in the decider.

Aaron Gillane was instrumental as Limerick won a first top flight league title since 1997. He finished as Man of the Match in the final against Waterford notching up 1-09 in the process with 1-05 of that coming from open play. His goal will long be remembered.

Commenting on the announcement, Ger O’Mahoney, Partner, PwC, said; "As the sponsor of the PwC All-Stars and the PwC GAA/GPA Player of the Month Awards, we are delighted to support excellence in young Irish talent. Today’s winners epitomised excellence throughout their respective league campaigns and on behalf of PwC I offer them both my heartiest congratulations.

“As this is the first Player of the Month event for 2019 I would also like to take the opportunity to welcome Liam and Donal Óg to our offices today and thank the GAA and the GPA for their support in all we look to do around our sponsorships of Gaelic games.”

Munster Council Chairman Liam Lenihan said; “Congratulations to our Player of the Month winners for April and best of luck to both of them in the days and weeks ahead with games that will determine how long their respective summer campaigns unfold.

"Seán has had an exceptional career to date for Kerry for a player so young and I’m sure we’ll be hearing and seeing much more about him throughout the summer.

“I’m delighted to see my fellow county man Aaron pick up the hurling award. He was a key reason Limerick added league honours to last year’s All-Ireland glory.

“Congratulations to both players and my thanks on behalf of the GAA to Ger and the PwC team for hosting today’s event and all they do in the promotion of our games.”

Speaking on behalf of the GPA, Chairman Seamus Hickey added; “Congratulations to both Aaron Gillane and Seán O’Shea on winning their respective awards. Both players have performed to exceptionally high levels on the pitch in recent times and are deserving winners of the PwC Player of The Month Awards for April. Aaron and Seán are both students in Mary I and UCC respectively and are preparing for exams which makes their achievements all the more admirable.”
